CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – This weekend’s winter storm forced some small businesses to close early or remain closed on Small Business Saturday, prompting one local owner to call for community support during the challenging weeks ahead.
Tim Palmer, owner of Salsa Guy Cafe, was among the business owners who closed early due to snow. He is now asking people to be intentional about where they spend their money to help small businesses weather the economic impact of the storm.
“For dinner, our dining room is normally full, and this time of the year, with weather-affected business, it really does affect our business levels, and it’s not just me, it’s several other locally owned businesses as well,” Palmer said.
Despite the weather challenges, some customers made the effort to support local businesses. Niki McElligott of Delhi dined at Salsa Guy Cafe with her two daughters, ordering the Alfalfa Special.
“I went to the old Alfalfa’s Deli and really loved that dill spread, and when I tasted it, the memory was really fantastic,” McElligott said.
McElligott said supporting local businesses provides benefits beyond helping the economy.
“Supporting the small local places helps keep the local economy healthy and vibrant,” she said. “It usually gets you a more interesting and valuable experience.”
Palmer has challenged people to help smaller businesses over the next few weeks by posting on social media for everyone to visit a local restaurant, bakery, coffee shop, retailer, or professional business.
Palmer demonstrated his commitment to the cause by supporting other local businesses over the weekend.
“Just to prove to everyone that this isn’t hard, but you have to be intentional about supporting locally small-owned businesses,” Palmer said.
For those who prefer not to venture out in winter weather, Palmer suggests purchasing gift cards as another way to support favorite local businesses.
