In a world flooded with diet trends: keto, detox cleanses, intermittent fasting challenges, many people begin wellness journeys with enthusiasm, only to abandon them a few weeks later. The cycle is familiar: strict rules, short-term results, frustration, and eventually a return to old habits.

Health experts increasingly argue that the problem isn’t a lack of motivation. Instead, it’s the approach itself. While restrictive diets promise rapid transformation, sustainable wellness is built on long-term lifestyle habits that support the body’s natural rhythms.

The Problem With Quick-Fix Diets

Many diets are designed around restriction, cutting calories drastically or eliminating entire food groups. While these strategies may produce short-term results, they often fail to create lasting change.

Arati Shah, co-founder and Head Dietitian, Cafe Nutrition, believes restrictive approaches rarely lead to sustainable weight management.

She explains that diets based on calorie restriction or the elimination of food groups tend to produce temporary results rather than long-term health benefits. Over time, such diets can slow the body’s metabolism, increase cravings, and eventually push individuals back to their previous eating patterns. This “on-and-off” dieting cycle not only stalls progress but can also damage a person’s relationship with food.

Instead, Shah stresses the importance of building habits that are realistic and flexible. Sustainable lifestyle changes include eating a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy carbohydrate and protein ratio, focusing on fibre and hydration, and practicing mindful eating. Allowing occasional indulgences can also help people stay consistent without feeling deprived.

She adds that long-term health is also supported by factors beyond food including regular physical activity, quality sleep, and effective stress management, all of which help maintain metabolic health and stable energy levels.

Wellness Is Built Through Consistent Habits

Beyond nutrition, experts say that sustainable health is shaped by daily routines and behavioural patterns that develop gradually over time.

Zoha Shaikh, Consultant Nutritionist, Nutriiya, emphasises that the body does not build health overnight. Instead, it develops through small, mindful habits practiced consistently.

According to Shaikh, many people approach fitness with the hope of achieving quick results through short-term diets. However, the body responds much better to routines that are realistic and sustainable.

She suggests that creating a structured daily rhythm can be extremely beneficial. Regular meal timings, adequate sleep, and even small pauses during the day allow the body to regulate metabolism and energy levels naturally.

Shaikh also warns against blindly following health trends. Rather than chasing lists of rules, individuals should focus on understanding their own symptoms and seeking professional guidance. Depending on the individual, the right approach may include dietary adjustments, stress management techniques, or practices such as meditation.

Importantly, she highlights that mental health plays a crucial role in physical wellbeing. Practices like journaling, reflection, and setting healthy boundaries can conserve emotional energy, making it easier to build sustainable lifestyle habits.

As Shaikh notes, diet is only one piece of a much larger puzzle. Without a strong foundation of purpose and commitment, health strategies often become background noise.

The Future of Wellness Is Personalised

While lifestyle changes are more sustainable than restrictive diets, experts believe the next frontier of wellness lies in personalization.

Dr. Sajeev Nair, Founder and Chairman, Vieroots, points out that many diets fail because they are not scientifically tailored to the individual.

He explains that truly scientific nutrition must go beyond generic dietary recommendations. Ideally, diets should consider factors such as a person’s genomics, metabolism, and gut microbiome. Without this level of personalization, even well-designed diets may not produce lasting results.

Dr. Nair also notes that lifestyle changes typically work better than diets because they involve multiple aspects of health including exercise, sleep, meditation, breathwork, stress reduction, and supplementation.

However, he adds that even lifestyle interventions should ideally be personalized. If the goal is long-term wellness including prevention of lifestyle diseases, stronger immunity, and optimal physical and cognitive performance, health strategies should align with an individual’s genetic and metabolic profile.

A Shift From Restriction to Sustainability

The growing consensus among health experts is clear: lasting wellness cannot be achieved through temporary restrictions.

Instead of chasing the next diet trend, individuals are better served by building routines that support their bodies in the long run, eating balanced meals, sleeping well, managing stress, and staying physically active.

As experts suggest, sustainable health is not built through extreme changes, but through small, consistent decisions made every day. Over time, these habits shape not just weight or fitness levels, but overall wellbeing, creating a lifestyle that can be maintained for years rather than weeks.
