Police said a teenager with a stolen gun opened fire and damaged property earlier this week at a Waynesboro business.
On. Oct. 14 shortly after 6 p.m., near the intersection of King Avenue and Ivy Street, officers from the Waynesboro Police Department responded to a 7-Eleven store on Ivy Street where gunshots damaged a passenger vehicle and a gas pump.
During the investigation, officers canvassing the area found the suspect, a 17-year-old juvenile, walking nearby. The juvenile was taken into custody without incident and a 9mm handgun was recovered in the vicinity.
Police said the investigation revealed the gun had reportedly been stolen from a home.
The teen is charged as a juvenile with the following felonies: discharging a firearm within or at a building, felony shooting at or throwing missiles at a car, and possession of a stolen firearm, police said. The teen also faces misdemeanor charges of willfully discharging firearms in a public place, possession or transportation of a firearm by persons under the age of 18, and reckless handling of a firearm.
The juvenile was placed in the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Detention Center in Staunton. If anyone has information regarding this incident, they are asked to contact Officer Soffel with the Waynesboro Police Department at (540) 942-6675.
