BRAZOS COUNTY, Texas (KBTX) -A train has been parked on the tracks near Steel Store Road in far west Brazos County for nearly a week, blocking the only entrance to a local business and cutting off access for nearby residents.

The train has sat on the tracks right in front of New Dawn Gin since Friday, March 13, blocking the intersection of Steel Store Rd and FM 50.

New Dawn Gin General Manager Caleb Thompson said it’s forcing customers, workers, and nearby residents to take an alternate route.

“A lot of time, people might not even know that there is a detour because it’s probably another two miles to get around the track,” Thompson explained.

Thompson said trains stopping in front of the business are not uncommon, but this is the longest one has remained in place. He said trains typically stop for six to eight hours.

Safety concerns raised

According to Thompson, the more pressing concern is emergency access. Heavy equipment operates in the area daily, and a blocked road could majorly slow emergency response.

“The biggest part is just the safety, if something were to happen, call 911, they’re having to go down around and come back,” Thompson said.

Union Pacific confirms ownership, cites mechanical issues

Although the train bears Canadian Pacific markings, Union Pacific confirmed to KBTX that it owns the train. The railroad said mechanical issues caused the delay and that the train will be moved tonight or tomorrow.

However, while frustrating, Thompson said the situation has not stopped operations as they continue to work around it.

“We’re still chugging along, just hoping to get a little resolution,” he added.
