As the Triad starts to thaw out after back-to-back winter storms, many local businesses are finally reopening their doors. However, some never closed at all! So they made the call and opened their doors, with staff carpooling with each other to make it into work.”Some of the employees, I will say, were not able to make it,” she said. “I was the main carpool driver, but I do feel like it definitely created a bond as far as trust and reliability, that we all knew that we were going to handle it together.” To their surprise, Maples said they only saw a slight dip in customers coming in compared to a normal day, and a lot of surprise and relief that they were open for business. “We actually had a lot of praise and gratitude from our guests,” she said. “Everyone was very grateful that we were open. They definitely voiced that to us. Caroline Wagner said most of the customers who came by live within walking distance, so she was busy all weekend, serving customers by herself. She said folks would come in groups every few minutes, then head back to exploring and, in some cases, sledding through a snow-covered downtown Winston-Salem. However, while the snow and ice didn’t deter customers, it has prevented deliveries to her business for the last two weeks, mainly nitrogen, which she uses every day when making her ice cream. At this point, she still doesn’t know when her next delivery is.”We don’t know, whenever the ice decides to clear,” she said. “Because it’s not safe to wheel the tanks across the ice and they park in the parking lot over here and wheel it in.”Keep up with the latest news and weather by downloading the WXII app here.
