Schools, businesses closing Friday for National Day of Action

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Several schools and businesses in southern Arizona will be closed on Friday, Jan. 30, for the National Day of Action.

Organizers are asking students to walk out of school, teachers to call out, businesses to close, consumers to refrain from shopping, and people to rally.

It is one part of the growing anti-ICE demonstrations following the two fatal shootings in Minneapolis and immigration enforcement operations.

SCHOOL CLOSURES

13 News has confirmed the following schools will be closed on Friday due to staffing issues. If you know of any other schools that will not be open, please email us at desk@kold.com.

  • Drachman K-8
  • Gale Elementary
  • McCorkle Academy of Excellence
  • Manzo Elementary
  • Pistor Middle School
  • Pueblo High
  • Sahuaro High
  • Tucson High
  • Van Buskirk Elementary

SCHOOLS OPEN

  • All schools in the Marana Unified School District.
  • All schools in the Sunnyside Unified School District.

The following are the protests and vigils in southern Arizona that 13 News knows about. If you are hosting or attending other events, please email us at desk@kold.com.

  • From 7:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m., the Tucson chapter of Veterans For Peace, and others, will host a candlelight vigil for Alex Pretti outside the VA Hospital at 3601 South 6th Avenue.
  • Starting at 2 p.m., there will be a rally outside the federal building at 3000 West Congress Street in downtown Tucson.
