Businesses in downtown Rutland are hoping to attract lots of shoppers this weekend with a variety of deals. Staff from the Downtown Rutland Partnership say that for some businesses, this is their biggest sales day of the year. With Small Business Saturday on the horizon, many shops are encouraging residents and visitors to check out the many sales aimed at injecting some money into the local economy.”I’m always surprised to see how much foot traffic is down here,” said Meshach Tourigny, the owner of Mountain Music, a record and gift store in Rutland. Hal Issente said the Downtown Rutland Partnership will be giving away hundreds of dollars’ worth of gift cards through raffles and their surprise tote bags, which will be filled with coupons, gift cards and more for the first 30 shoppers who come in. They will also be providing hot cocoa in their office so people can warm up and enjoy a treat.”It’s really a fun kickoff to the whole holiday shopping season,” Issente said. Many shops in the area will be offering a variety of discounts for their products. Tourigny is offering 20 percent off all used vinyls at Mountain Music. The Green Spell plant shop is selling pots for 50 percent off when customers buy a plant. Another small business participating is Willow Bee Exchange, a secondhand shop that sells clothing and toys for children. They are offering 20 percent off on all customers’ total purchases. The owner, Elizabeth Redmond, has organized a game where she will be hiding trinkets around the store and kids who find them will win a gift card. Small Business Saturday mainly aims to uplift local businesses. Redmond said there are many perks to shopping local, including access to unique products.”When you’re shopping local, you’re not only supporting your community, you’re supporting a small family,” said Redmond.Tourigny also emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses. “A lot of people who have lived in Rutland for a while have seen kind of the ups and downs of downtown, and it’s really full right now and there’s a great mix of shops. So, if you like seeing that in town, you’ve got to support us,” he said. Clover Exploration, a children’s play space, is also hosting a holiday crafts workshop during Small Business Saturday. The session will allow parents to get shopping done without bringing their kids into stores. Businesses said that by purchasing gifts locally, your money goes directly back into the community, supporting your friends, neighbors, and local families.
