GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A business was damaged, and a firefighter is recovering after battling a fire in Gwinnett County Saturday night.
According to Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services, firefighters responded to calls about a business fire at the 4500 block of Nelson Brogdon Boulevard in Buford around 7:17 p.m. 9-1-1 callers told fire officials they saw smoke and flames and that the BenchMark Physical Therapy was on fire.
Firefighters found the roof and attic of the two-story office building engulfed in flames. Gwinnett Fire says they started using two water hoses to put out the fire while “search teams were looking for victims inside the building.”
While attacking the fire, the roof collapsed, prompting all crews to exit the building, according to fire officials. Two ladder trucks and two large hose lines were used while in defense mode to take out much of the fire.
The fire department says the fire was under control around 7:42 p.m., and fire crews “once more made an interior approach to extinguish the fire entirely.” A hazmat team responded to the scene for drone operations because of the roof collapse.
According to Gwinnett Fire, one firefighter experienced minor injuries due to ground operations and was taken to a hospital.
The business keyholder told the fire department that they had left the office the day before and hadn’t returned since.
Fire investigators say that “the cause of the fire was undetermined and originated in the attic space.”
The investigation is ongoing.
