ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – This holiday season, Tad More Tailoring partners with the SwedishAmerican Health Foundation to turn thread and fabric into comfort and hope.
The local business and foundation look for volunteers to help create warm scarves and tie blankets for patients at the Carbone Cancer Center.
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13, at Tad More Tailoring, 6116 Mulford Village Dr.
Hosted by the Tad More Sustainability Institute, it’s the first year of the Spread Holiday Warmth event.
At Tad More, their mission is to help reduce waste from the fast fashion industry. For the event, participants will be using scraps from alterations to make the scarves and blankets.
Organizers say the handmade gifts are a way to bring comfort, hope and joy to those enduring the challenges of cancer treatment.
“Think of it as a light in a dark day for somebody. They’re going in for their chemotherapy, they’re scared, they’re cold, they’re tired, and to have somebody give them just a small blanket or a scarf to cover their head, it’s kind of like showing them we care,” said Sarene Alsharif, the co-owner of Tad More Tailoring.
Alsharif is also one of the board members of the SwedishAmerican Health Foundation. She adds no matter what your abilities are, there is something at this event to make somebody’s day.
“That’s how communities make it through, it’s by each one of us supporting each one of us,” Alsharif said.
For those interested in volunteering, you can reserve a free spot here.
Donations will also be accepted through the SwedishAmerican Health Foundation website.
