• Gas prices in Madison have increased 40 cents this week to an average of $2.93 per gallon, according to AAA

• The price increase comes after U.S. airstrikes in Iran

• Union Cab reports a 15% increase in gas prices within the last week

MADISON, Wis. — Rising gas prices could impact local Madison businesses. Some may have to consider a surcharge if the increase continues.

According to AAA, gas prices have jumped 40 cents this week compared to last week, with the average price for a regular gallon of gas in Madison currently at $2.93, as of Wednesday.

At the Kwik Trip on Madison’s west side, prices are approaching $3 per gallon.

The price increase comes after U.S. sent airstrikes to Iran.

John Hersberger, who has worked at Union Cab for six years, said the company is seeing the impact of the price increases.

“We’re seeing prices have gone up about 15% from the last time we bought,” Hersberger said.

Hersberger says Union Cab will be fine regardless.

“There will be a little bit of a bite, but hopefully not too bad,” he said. “Weathered a lot of storms in over 40 years. We’ll be here tomorrow. We’re not going anywhere.”

Union Cab tries to maintain standard pricing when oil prices increase. If prices continue they may implement a surcharge.

“When gas prices have gone way up, we haven’t been allowed by the city to add a surcharge. We really want to avoid doing that if we can, but it is allowed. And if we have to put that into effect, we will,” Hersberger explained.

Most of Union Cabs customers are regulars and don’t mind paying an extra fee.
