Owner of Platform Z Restaurant in Manayunk says repeated vandalism threatening business

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The owner of a Manayunk restaurant says repeated vandalism is becoming costly and could threaten her ability to keep the business open after another window was recently broken.

Anna Yu, owner of Platform Z Restaurant on Main Street, said the latest incident happened over the weekend when someone punched through one of the restaurant’s windows.

“I was like, ‘Oh my God, here we go again.’ It just happened six months ago, give me a break,” Yu said.

Video from inside the restaurant captures the moment someone punches through the window. The damage left behind will cost about $3,500 to repair, Yu said.

“These are commercial-grade historical approved glass, so it’s very expensive to replace,” Yu said.

Security footage from around 12 a.m. Sunday shows a group of people outside the business on Main Street. Moments later, they walk along the side of the building on Cotton Street.

“She walked past this window and just decided to smash it. There was no fighting. It was not that she accidentally bumped into it or anything,” Yu said. “She punched it with her handbag.”

A tarp now covers the broken window as Yu considers whether it is worth repairing again.

“Stupidity of people causes good people like me the financial and emotional burden I had to shut down yesterday,” she said.

Yu said she has only operated the restaurant for about a year and a half and that this is the fourth vandalism incident. In the first two cases, she said someone cut the wires to the restaurant’s air conditioning compressor, costing about $1,700.

“I would like to be here for as long as possible, but the constant vandalism … I don’t know, it’s making it really hard to stay here,” she said.

Yu said she reported the vandalism to police and hopes to see more patrols in the area, especially on weekend nights and heading into the summer.
