A North Texas food truck owner says a Thanksgiving weekend break-in cost him thousands in equipment and forced his business to cancel catering jobs.
Frank Hernandez, owner of King Kups in McKinney, said he started selling elotes street corn with his oldest daughter in 2018 as a side business.
“And then it just grew and grew and grew,” Hernandez said.
As the business expanded, Hernandez added a catering trailer so they could attend more events beyond their food truck parked off North Central Expressway near West Virginia Street.
“We travel all over DFW with this trailer, so, this is our workhorse,” Hernandez said Monday.
But over the holiday weekend, that workhorse was left inoperable.
McKinney police said officers responded to a report of a break-in at a storage facility in the 800 block of North McDonald Street on Nov. 28.
Hernandez said he realized something was wrong when he went to the trailer the morning after Thanksgiving.
“First thing we noticed when we walked in was locks were broken off,” he said.
A generator mounted to the floor of the trailer was missing, along with other equipment. Hernandez estimated the loss at $3,000 to $4,000. He also said the trailer appeared ransacked.
The theft meant King Kups had to cancel two scheduled catering gigs on Black Friday — both weddings.
“We had to call someone and tell them that their wedding was not going to have food because these guys took our stuff, so that was the heartbreaking thing for me,” Hernandez said.
McKinney police told NBC 5 the investigation remains active. No suspect descriptions or leads have been released.
