RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — The rush is on in the triangle to grab last-minute items from the grocery store before a winter storm brings icy conditions and an arctic blast of cold air.

The winter storm is threatening to bring not just ice and cold weather across the triangle, but an increasing chance of power outages.

Zoe O’Brien says it was very busy at the Harris Teeter in the Village District in Raleigh.

“Stuff like pasta was fully cleared out. Some canned soups were missing. Some breads definitely were missing. A lot of people were also stocking up on meats,” she said.

Gianna Jones says she was able to grab just about everything she needed.

“I got some pasta and some non-perishables. I tried to get some water, but it was all out,” said Jones.

Amid the rush to get items from the grocery store, some local businesses are also finding ways to help ahead of the storm.

Cheeni is offering snow day meal kits of prepared food at their locations in Downtown Durham and RTP.

Cheeni Chef & Owner Preeti Waas says they wanted to make sure the community stays well fed during the storm.

“To make sure that in case people don’t want to cook or didn’t have enough ingredients or they’re unable to cook cause the electricity’s out and the power is out. And if they have an electric stove, for instance,” she said. “We just hope that together, by helping each other, it’ll benefit everyone.”

Waas says they also wanted to find a way to support their staff as the storm forces many small businesses to close their doors for days.

“Help us out to help other small businesses out because two or three days of lost revenue can be fatal to a small business, especially in a month that we’re already very slow,” said Waas.

Head over to Cheeni’s website to find out how to order one of their snow day meal kits.
