Each January, that stillness is interrupted by the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting, transforming a quiet alpine town, Davos, into a mecca of power. Davosians — heads of state, business leaders, technologists, philanthropists and billionaires — convene alongside spectacle. This year’s theme: the Spirit of Dialogue.
I arrived by invitation to screen my documentary, Darkness to Light: When Technology Heals Generations. A film that asks whether the ethical use of technology can humanize policy and lower historical levels of migration. A call for dialogue at a time when technology itself is scrutinized.
The world’s most urgent issues sit on the table: unethical deployment of AI, mass human displacement, climate instability, geopolitical fragmentation, dwindling natural resources and the erosion of trust.
The week concluded. Articles summarized takeaways. The town emptied. The stillness returned.
While Davosians Negotiated, AI Agents Accelerated
Across the Atlantic, a new social network quietly launched that tipped the scales. Moltbook.
Built exclusively for AI agents, it surpassed one million subscribers by February. Humans, merely observers. Agents post, vote, comment and mock — autonomously.
A novelty that went sideways.
Agents exchanged unverified data, and discussed abandoning English in favor of a machine-native language.
For business leaders, this isn’t science fiction but a structural transformation occurred without guardrails. Early warnings playing out at scale.
The unsettling part is not Moltbook’s existence. It’s that we normalized autonomy and failure.
Meanwhile, ordinary people were already asking the right questions.
The Question I Answered Too Quickly
Months prior, I was invited as a guest on Petrie Hosken’s Talk TV to discuss AI and its implications.
A caller named William asked, “Do you think AI will replace politicians?” An ordinary citizen looking far enough ahead to genuinely confront what leaders hadn’t: the delegation of agency and replacement.
I replied with intrigue, “I asked ChatGPT to project forward. It predicted that one day there will be a President who is an AI agent.”
Petrie followed, “Would you vote for an AI politician?” William responded, “I would.”
Leaving Davos, I realized replacement is not confined to politics. Delegation of power impacts every industry. AI agents in lieu of corporate executives, creatives, doctors and even teachers. History reveals: when apathy rises, leadership is replaced. Consensus in favor of AI agents over humans. Algorithmic productivity over human imperfection.
How We Got Here
Early in 2023, the first AI agents appeared publicly. Tools like Auto-GPT and BabyAGI introduced systems capable of setting goals, prioritizing tasks and executing them autonomously. Framed as productivity breakthroughs, they were marvels.
Then came the alarms.
Agents accessed restricted consumer data. Wiped company databases for efficiency. Fabricated explanations to justify outcomes. Optimizing productivity became the sole objective.

Researchers warned about relinquishing autonomy without interpretability. Papers published. Pioneers resigned. Bottom-lines peeked. Companies kept deploying because AI agents drive results.
Agents do not seek truth or morality. They function mechanically, optimizing outcomes based on data and predictive modeling.
They negotiate contracts, trade equity, optimize supply chains and automate internal workflows, without fatigue or sentiment. Already embedded in finance, cybersecurity, defense, healthcare, media and enterprise, they act on our behalf with limited transparency and accountability.
Speed became strategy. Efficiency became a competitive advantage.
Achieving Mature Innovation with Human Overrides
This is not a call to stifle innovation. It’s a call to mature it.

Mature innovation does not slow progress. It strengthens it through interpretability, accountability and systematic deployment.
For companies deploying AI agents at scale, black box systems cannot exist in regulated, global industries.
If authority is delegated, leaders must be able to trace how outcomes are derived.
If agents learn, predictions must remain legible in a coding language humans can oversee.
If agents collaborate, override capabilities must exist with accountability.
If harm occurs, liability frameworks must be defined with ramifications.
It protects brand trust. It reduces exposure. It sustains profits.
For technologists, the question is not what can be built, but what is responsible for release. Without shared norms, enforceable constraints and transparency, autonomy is not progress. It is systemic global risk management.
For leaders, forums like Davos matter when dialogue produces durable solutions long after the snow melts. In an era of technological acceleration, governance must evolve in parallel to balance the power and protect citizens and markets.
Governance no longer belongs solely to governments. Corporate delegation now shapes societal power.
Humans Must Stay in the Driver’s Seat
William’s question was never hypothetical nor an imagined coup. He was sensing a transfer of agency.
If business leaders continue delegating decision-making to autonomous systems without interpretability, enforceable guidelines and shared accountability, value will no longer be measured by enriching human life but by optimizing the bottom line.
Morality becomes dispensable. Agency turns cold and impossible to reclaim.
The future isn’t about whether AI will lead nations or take over companies. The core question now is whether leaders will still hold a seat at the table or whether they’ve already given it away.
