PORTLAND (WGME) – A bill aimed at strengthening data privacy laws in Maine is getting pushback from several businesses in Maine.
Joined by Slugger from the Portland Sea Dogs, a group of Maine businesses spoke out against the bill Monday in Augusta.
The bill would limit the type of data and personal information companies can collect from consumers in Maine.
Some Maine companies say that would limit information customers might actually want to receive, and the ability of local businesses to reach those customers.
“Targeted digital marketing and social media have become a vital part of our efforts to ensure that we continue to reach the key audience members,” Portland Sea Dogs Assistant GM Dennis Meehan said. “We can strategically market to fans in Maine, and tourists who are visiting our state and searching for things such as baseball, or Red Sox, or sports.”
The bill’s sponsor says the legislation strikes the right balance and only allows data collection when reasonably necessary for a company to provide a specific service.
It passed the House last month and faces further votes in the legislature.
