LANSING, Mich. (WILX) -Local businesses got a rush of customers as Saturday was Small Business Saturday.
Small Business Saturday is a day that encourages people to support more than 33 million small businesses across the United States. The initiative began in 2010 and was designed to boost small retailers that were struggling during the economic recession.
Some business owners have already noticed the effects of the initiative.
“Now, hopefully they’re just going to be coming in in droves. Which I mean already it’s been busier than it has been in the last few years. I also think people are really excited to support local businesses right now,” said Laura Castle, a business owner.
Brian Calley, president of the Small Business Association of Michigan, said Small Business Saturday addresses a specific need in the retail calendar.
“Small Business Saturday was really born out of the need to go beyond the, what had turned into a big business holiday for most, the day after Thanksgiving, and parlay that straight into local small business support,” Calley said.
Calley said the holiday season is make or break for many local shops.,
