GRAYSON COUNTY, Texas (KXII) – Early voting has begun and unincorporated areas in Grayson County have a proposed sales tax to consider.
It’s supposed to fund fire and EMS services in these areas since they are not obligated to do so.
David Apple, the owner of Tom Bean Feed, at first was against this proposed sales tax.
“But then when I went to the town halls and did a lot of my own research I realized that these first responders within their city limits are not obligated to come out here and they are operating on a budget deficit…so it’s a pretty easy yes,” David Apple, Tom Bean Feed Owner, said.
Now the proposed tax has Apple’s approval, and he “will be voting yes” come election day.
He said that considering a new tax is “scary” and can understand why some people are against it.
“Any time you see tax you get a little bit wound up and it’s the scariest three letter word in our vocabulary,” said Apple.
But, with the growth that is expected to come out to these areas “we have to be able to serve those new homes and families.”
“There’s an open invite for the entire country to move to North Texas,” said Apple.
According to Apple a common misconception among his neighbors is “people thinking if they vote no on this then they will pay less tax.”
“We will always pay the 8.25%,” said Apple.
His fear during this election season is, if this proposed sales tax doesn’t pass, then his neighbors won’t receive the help they need because fire and EMS services won’t have the funding to respond.
“We see Whitewright ambulance and Howe ambulance come past our property and business all the time and if they lose that funding it’s going to get really crowded out here and really underserved,” said Apple.
Apple is “voting yes” but because of this he finds it of the utmost importance to “hold these politicians accountable.”
“If we give them a yes then we want to make sure that these funds go directly to these services and I’ll follow up with the fire chief and police chief to make sure of that,” said Apple.
