Home care providers say taking care of a loved one with memory issues can be a difficult and isolating journey. “It gets to be very stressful when you are trying to manage and keep your loved one in their home as long as possible because that, ultimately, is always the goal,” said Nebraska GUIDE program director Michelle Hoeft. Local home care business Trusted Life Choices is partnering with Nebraska’s GUIDE program to alleviate some of that burden from the caregiver. “We really can sit with the family and think outside the box. How can we help you, the family member, but also increase the quality of life for the person with dementia?” said Trusted Life Choices director Sandra Miller. Twenty-four-seven care team access, caregiver support and a respite fund are just a few of the services provided in the federal GUIDE program, which aims to help people through their dementia experience. Miller says this care can look different depending on each family’s situation. “We can do, like, housekeeping, personal cares, medication reminders. You want to go out for dinner with your friends? We can come and stay with mom or dad or the spouse,” said Miller.Hoeft says the process to apply is relatively simple.”They need a traditional Medicare. So, the good old-fashioned red, white and blue card. They may have supplemental insurance, but they cannot have an advantage plan,” said Hoeft. The family member will also need a dementia diagnosis. “We have a geriatric physician that is backing our program. So, if we need to, we can get that diagnosis,” said Hoeft.
