While in Detroit on a national book promotion tour, former Vice President Kamala Harris stopped to make a smoothie at Trap Vegan with Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield on Saturday, Feb. 28.
Harris and Sheffield met Trap Vegan owner Jasmine Royster, along with family and guests from Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, the sorority Harris and Royster belong to. Detroit City Councilwoman Angela Whitfield Calloway, who represents Trap Vegan’s district and is a member of the same sorority, also attended the event.
Harris and Sheffield mingled with restaurant staff and guests, as well as went behind the counter to make smoothies.
About Trap Vegan
Trap Vegan is going on its fifth year bringing “healthier on the go options to the City of Detroit,” Royster said when introducing her restaurant to Harris.
It is located at 20198 Livernois in Detroit’s historic Avenue of Fashion, between 7 Mile and 8 Mile Roads, lined with largely Black-owned businesses, including boutiques, restaurants, and art galleries. Royster told Harris the area is considered the Black Wall Street of Detroit.
Sheffield said she picked to meet at the restaurant because its a small business on the Avenue of Fashion owned by a native Detroiter. Sheffield said she hopes Trap Vegan expands to another location.
“This is a great location to highlight in Detroit,” Sheffield said. “She (Royster) represents the best of our city.”
Trap Vegan serves vegan smoothies, salads, burgers, wraps and more. For more information, visit www.trapvegan.com.
Why was Kamala Harris in Detroit?
Harris stopped at the Fillmore Detroit on Friday, Feb. 27, as a part of a national tour to promote her political memoir “107 Days.”
Protesters from Detroit Anti War Committee met outside the Filmore during the time of the book tour. At a protest on Wayne State University’s campus Saturday, Jo Pico, a Detroit Anti War Committee organizer, said it’s as important now as it was while Harris was in office to advocate for the U.S. to divest from Israel and for Detroit to divest from companies that benefit Israel.
“I think this is a real full circle moment that within 24 hours of us standing outside of Kamala Harris’s stupid book tour of her failed presidential campaign where she abandoned the Palestinian people and abandoned us and doubled down on her commitment to fund Israel … Trump pulls up and decided to let Israel bomb Iran,” Pico said.
Before walking into Trap Vegan on Saturday, Harris stopped to talk to reporters and denounced the U.S.-Israeli joint attack on Iran. She urged Congress to act against the attacks immediately.
“I unequivocally oppose this war of choice and everyone should,” Harris said.
