JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) — After more than five years, a Johns Island entrepreneur is finally moving forward with her business. Lillie Smalls broke ground on her new dessert shop Wednesday, Mae’s Sweets With a Soul.
Smalls and her husband purchased the lot along Savannah Highway in 2019, but plans to build were delayed by the pandemic and other challenges. The couple said faith and perseverance kept the project alive.
Smalls said that she hopes the shop will be more than a place for desserts, but a community gathering space. “We want to be able to donate to schools and do scholarships and things like that,” she said. “We want to give.”
“We want to build this place in the model of a home and so you come to our village, and come to our home,” said her husband, Carl.
The couple encouraged other entrepreneurs to stick with their business plans, even when faced with obstacles.
