The basics:

  • Jersey Mike’s names Andrew Skehan as first president of international to lead global growth
  • Skehan brings leadership experience from Krispy Kreme, Popeyes, Wendy’s/Arby’s Group
  • Chain plans major expansion in Canada — with 300 new locations by 2034

Jersey Mike’s Subs is bringing on a restaurant industry veteran to spearhead global expansion efforts.

In a Nov. 20 press release, the Manasquan-based chain announced the appointment of Andrew Skehan as its inaugural president of international.

As part of his role, Skehan will lead multinational growth strategy, development, operations and marketing initiatives as Jersey Mike’s scales its presence across key markets such as Canada and the U.K.

Prior to Jersey Mike’s, Skehan was president and CEO of Home Franchise Concepts, a large franchising system focused on the home services industry. He has also held leadership roles including president of North America at Krispy Kreme, president of international at Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen and chief operating officer of Wendy’s/Arby’s Group.

Skehan’s management experience also spans positions with Churchill Downs Inc., Nabisco and PepsiCo Restaurants International.

Founded in 1956, Jersey Mike’s started out as a small sandwich shop in Point Pleasant. With more than 3,200 locations in the U.S. and Canada, it is now one of the fastest-growing quick service restaurants in North America.

Scale away

Skehan’s arrival comes as Jersey Mike’s looks to expand its presence in Canada.

The banner established a strategic partnership last year with Canadian operator Redberry Restaurants. The chain now expects to open 300 outposts across the Great White North by 2034.

Private equity giant Blackstone acquired Jersey Mike’s in January for a reported $8 billion. Since then, it has undergone several leadership changes.

That includes the departure of longtime CEO and founder Peter Cancro and selection of his predecessor. The company also brought on a new chief operating officer and its first chief people officer.

Jersey Mike’s CEO Charlie Morrison said, “As we enter this next phase of growth, we’re delighted to welcome Andy.

“His proven record driving expansion for some of the world’s best-known restaurant brands makes him the ideal leader to guide our next chapter. As we scale, we’re energized by the opportunity to share our brand with new communities around the world and deliver the same exceptional experience our guests know and love,” Morrison added.

Skehan said he was “honored to join Jersey Mike’s and help lead this next chapter of global growth.”

“The Jersey Mike’s experience may have started in America, but its appeal is universal – great food made fresh, served with genuine hospitality, and rooted in the communities we serve. The opportunity ahead is exciting, and I look forward to introducing more guests around the world to what makes Jersey Mike’s so special,” he said.
