DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) — Icy road conditions in the Bull City are making it difficult for drivers. They are also affecting the bottom lines of some local businesses.
“It’s tough for us to get out of our neighborhood and my mother’s neighborhood,” said Harry Monds, owner of Lula & Sadie’s Southern Eatery. “It seems to be a little different than it has in the past. It didn’t take long for residential areas to get dealt with. No trucks going through. We haven’t seen anything like that. Seems that it’s taking a little longer than it has in the past.”
The City of Durham has prioritized clearing bridges, main roads, and major side streets. Crews have cleared roads in two phases.
“If it’s completely iced over, then we’re putting on a treatment of either salt or salt and sand. We’re letting the sun assist by melting it. Then coming back in and either chiseling it away or chipping it away,” said Kevin Lilley with the City of Durham. “This is a storm that we need to be patient during. We are not set for extreme winter weather as New England region and the Midwest.”
According to Lilley, traffic on the roads is creating challenges.
“We’re trying to direct people left and right as we try to clear the sidewalk and pedestrian area. The more cars we experience, the more delays we’re having trying to get work done,” said Lilley.
It’s possible the Triangle could see another snowfall this weekend. ABC11 asked whether crews are working to remove all the ice ahead of another weather event. Lilley called it ideal, but not practical. Crews will be on standby this weekend in case it snows.
“We’re finding ice every day and will continue for the next few. We will remove as much as we can. We’ll push it where it will melt and not affect the roadways and sidewalks,” he said.
While parts of the Bull City are thawing out, Monds is concerned about what the days ahead could bring. Sunday is his busiest day. He had to close the restaurant during last week’s storm, and another potential weekend storm could have major effects on his bottom line.
“It hurts big time,” said Monds.
