GREEN BAY (WLUK) — Green Bay Metro Fire says firefighters continue to put out a business fire that’s been active for more than 24 hours.
A fire broke out at Green Bay Converting at 2200 Larsen Road Monday morning.
The winds from Blizzard Elsa not only fueled the fire but also sent smoke and debris miles away, resulting in a shelter-in-place order within a 3/4 mile radius. That has since been lifted Tuesday.
Since Monday night, the fire expanded further into the warehouse of Green Bay Converting, which stores paper products. Parts of the roof and building have collapsed as well. Smoke and fire damage affected other buildings of the business.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Lt. Shauna Walesh says it’s been difficult to investigate the cause while the fire is still burning.
She says the weather and the size of the facility posed many challenges to firefighters, especially those who did not have prior experience to working multi-day fires and in blizzard-like conditions.
The estimated cost of damage is unknown at this time.
