On a snowy senior day Saturday in Athens, the home Bulldogs handled business with a dominant sweep of DIII foe Emory. Georgia touched the wall first in 32 events, with the women winning 190-1-6, and the men earning a win in 191-112.
Women’s Recap
The Bulldogs immediately opened with a 1-2-3 sweep of the 200 medley relay; Ieva Maluka (24.79), Charlotte Headland (27.19), Hayden Hollingsworth (23.51), and Katie Belle Sikes (21.96) combined for the top performance in the event in 1:37.45.
Georgia’s Kennedi Dobson continued her impressive freshman campaign with a sweep of the backstrokes, swimming a lifetime best 52.57 in the 100 back, clipping the NCAA qualifying standard and taking the win by nearly two seconds. In the 200 back, more than three and a half seconds separated Dobson from the field, clocking 1:54.08.
Freshman Izzy Beau also earned a sweep of her own, with wins in the 100 fly in 53.27 and the 200 fly in 1:57.39. She was the only swimmer in the event to swim under 2:00.
Sophomore Maire Landreneau logged the fastest 100 breast of the meet in 1:00.95, her fastest ever performance. She later added the 200 IM to her win total in 1:59.69, a near second and a half margin of victory.
Freshman Kylie McMurray added her first college win in the 1000 free in 10:10.27. Her teammate, Maeve Eckerman, also logged the first win of her college career as well in 1:48.31 to lead a 1-2-3 sweep of the 200 free.
Seniors Emma Norton and Maluka each added wins on their senior nights, with Norton claiming the 100 free in the only time better than 50 seconds (49.59). Maluka topped all performers in the 500 free, swimming the fastest time of her career in 4:44.00, more than 16 seconds faster than anyone in the field.
Junior Michelle Cummo dominated the diving events for Georgia, sweeping the 1-meter (272.78) and 3-meter (285.83) events.
Emory has solid performances across the board; freshman Holly Brundage finished 5th in the 100 back, clocking an NCAA DIII-qualifying time of 56.03.
Junior Katie Cohen logged an NCAA DIII qualifying time in the 100 breast after touching 3rd in 1:02.66.
Men’s Recap
Georgia’s men followed suit from the women, with a meet-opening win in the 200 medley relay as Tane Bidois (22.17), Finn Wendland (25.00), Luca Urlando (19.84), and Tomas Koski (19.53) banded together to earn the event win in 1:26.54, over a half second faster than Emory’s runner up relay in 1:27.22.
Urlando was untouchable on the day, earning two individual wins and two more as a member of the medley and relay and 200 free relay. His first individual win came in the 200 freestyle, where he notched a season-best 1:33.29, earning an NCAA-qualifying time in the process. He later picked up the 200 backstroke win by just eight hundredths over his teammate Ruard Van Renen in 1:40.40, another season best and NCAA Qualifying time, bringing Urlando’s total number of NCAA Qualifying times on the season to eight.
Freshman Finn Hammer nabbed his first win as a Bulldog with his 15:07.39 swim in the 1650 freestyle, about six seconds better than his teammate Sean Green, who finished 2nd in 15:13.24.
Senior Roman Valdez swam his fastest time of the season to win the 50 free in 19.95, the only swimmer under 20 seconds.
Valdez’s senior teammate Cale Martter clocked a lifetime best in the 100 fly, charging to a more than a second win in 47.76.
Junior Matthew Bray also came away with two wins on the day for Georgia, winning the 1-meter diving event in 349.80, and also on 3-meter with a new lifetime best of 428.33.
Urlando (19.52), Bidois (19.42), Koski (19.77), and Kris Mihaylov (20.42) closed out the meet with a combined 200 free relay win in 1:19.13.
Emory earned two event wins on the day, both coming on the men’s side; senior Henri Bonnault led the way in the men’s 100 breast in 54.28, a half second faster than Martter of Georgia in 54.83.
Emory freshman Carson Kalish finished atop the 200 IM in 1:48.83, leading a 1-4 sweep for Emory.
