MORTON (25News Now) – The State Fire Marshal’s Office has been called to investigate a fire that caused an estimated $100,000 damage to a Morton business.

A passerby called the fire department about 5:15 p.m. Sunday after seeing smoke inside Great Harvest Bread Co. in the 600 block of West Jackson Street.

Great Harvest was closed on Sunday, according to its website.

No injuries were reported, and Morton Fire Chief Justin Hale said the fire caused an undetermined amount of damage.

The fire was out in about 15 minutes. Hale said it appears the fire was not intentionally set, but he provided no other details.

East Peoria and Washington fire departments were called to help Morton firefighters.

Jackson Street was closed for a time while fire crews were on the scene.

Chief Hale said the State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.

Meantime, a post Sunday night on Great Harvest’s Facebook page said the fire started in the lobby, and it was caused by an electrical problem. The business will be closed in the short term, the post said.

Here’s what the owner and his team said:

“Earlier this evening we had a fire in our lobby break out. No one was hurt and the cause has not been confirmed, outside of it being electrical.

Unfortunately, we will be closed down for the short term. A huge thank you to the Morton Fire Department and other 1st responders as well!

However, it is Thanksgiving week, and our amazing staff is determined to fulfill all of our orders for our customers

We will need to work out the details, but we will most likely set up a pop-up table and tent where customers can come and pick everything up in a smaller window of time.

We were able to save most of the order slips, so we will be contacting you.”
