The Department of Consumer Affairs has launched a thorough probe into e-commerce platforms accused of imposing extra charges under deceptive labels, practices now officially branded as “dark patterns” that mislead buyers and exploit consumers. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, overseeing Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and New & Renewable Energy, revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that the ministry is taking strong action.

He said, “The Department of Consumer Affairs has received complaints against e-commerce platforms charging extra for Cash-on-Delivery, a practice classified as a dark pattern that misleads and exploits consumers. A detailed investigation has been initiated, and steps are being taken to scrutinise these platforms closely. Strict action will be taken against those violating consumer rights to ensure transparency and uphold fair practices in India’s growing e-commerce sector.”

The issue surfaced when a user posted a screenshot showing an e-commerce site adding fees such as “Offer Handling Fee,” “Payment Handling Fee,” and “Protect Promise Fee,” which inflated the final amount payable even after discounts.

Consumers Voice Frustration Over Hidden Charges

Following the minister’s announcement, numerous shoppers voiced their displeasure, sharing similar stories about unexpected fees increasing their bills. Many criticised the lack of transparency, highlighting that such hidden costs have become widespread, complicating the online shopping experience and making it more expensive. Calls for stricter oversight and regulation echoed throughout social media discussions.

Dark patterns are manipulative techniques designed to trick users into making purchases or paying fees they did not intend to. The Department of Consumer Affairs has recently intensified its vigilance on these deceptive tactics as part of its mission to safeguard consumers in India’s booming digital marketplace. With e-commerce becoming an essential part of everyday life, this crackdown aims to enhance fairness and transparency for all online shoppers.
