Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.
About a year after reopening, Casa del Rey is closed again. Owners of the Mexican restaurant at 901 W. Russell St. said the concept “doesn’t fit our portfolio, and now it’s time for us to move on.” The Eining family purchased the business shortly after it closed last year. Gift cards can be used at Josiah’s Coffeehouse, Cafe & Bakery, which the family also owns. The building is for sale.
Reptile Adventure Zoo has opened. The business at 2501 W. Russell St. features hundreds of reptiles on display and a pet shop focused on replies. It’s also the home of owner Andrew Adam’s nonprofit, Sioux Falls Area Reptile Rescue & Rehoming, along with the Sioux Falls Herpetological Society and his wife’s accounting firm, Stacey Adam, CPA. Admission is $10, and it’s open daily.
Sanford Health is opening new offerings in the new year. The David H. & Christine Billion Pediatric Emergency Department will start seeing patients Jan. 6. It’s in remodeled space within the existing emergency department at Sanford USD Medical Center and includes a dedicated pediatric triage area, one additional pediatric trauma room and 11 exam rooms, including two with safety features to care for children during behavioral health emergencies. Sanford Orthopedic Hospital will begin treating patients Jan. 12 on the Sanford USD Medical Center campus. The nine-story building includes 12 operating rooms. Two floors are occupied by Highpoint Hotel, which has 56 guest rooms that also will be open to the public as of Jan. 12.
Caribou Coffee has closed one of its two locations on Minnesota Avenue. The shop in a retail center at 31st Street had been open for more than a decade. The original stand-alone location at 28th Street remains open.
McDonald’s has opened in Harrisburg. It’s the ninth location in South Dakota for Nebraska-based franchisee Leonard Management. The stand-alone restaurant at 148 N. Cliff Ave. is open from 5 a.m. to midnight daily.
Sports footwear retailer Vans has opened at The Empire Mall. It’s located in the JCPenney wing in a spot that most recently was Go Calendar. That business has relocated to a large space near the children’s play area — at least for the holiday season.
Primp boutique in downtown Sioux Falls has closed. The Minnesota-based retailer also shut down its remaining three locations in the Twin Cities.
A second downtown boutique has announced it is closing. Pasque Boutique began as an e-commerce business in 2019 and opened a storefront in August 2024 in The Steel District at 151 E. Fourth Place. A final day in business will be no later than Dec. 30, owner Alicia Engelking said. The boutique also will stop selling online, although Engelking is hoping to find a way to continue selling permanent jewelry.
Rosie’s Cafe reopened today under new ownership. Owner Tom “Tiger” Hinrichs and his working partner, Barry Selland, remodeled the cafe at 2200 W. Madison St., which has room for 48 diners. Hours are 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, when only breakfast will be served.
The third location in Sioux Falls for Pho Thai has opened. The locally owned restaurant is at 4001 E. 10th St. in the former Denny’s building. Diners will find the same menu of Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese dishes — minus the sushi that’s available only downtown. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
A couple who learned how to bake Guatemalan breads and pastries from relatives is opening a bakery and cafe on the east side of Sioux Falls. Miguel and Magdalena Jimenez’s La Huehueteca Bakery & Cafe will be in a retail center at 2400 E. Sixth St. It’s expected to open in mid-January or early February.
