OpenAI’s newly confirmed shopping feature in ChatGPT, called “Instant Checkout,” introduces a streamlined approach for e-commerce, allowing purchases directly through AI conversations. The system relies on a new open protocol, Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), developed with Stripe and Shopify, designed to enable merchants to sell via multiple AI agents while retaining full control over their business.

A key innovation is Stripe’s “Shared Payment Token” (SPT), which allows secure payment processing without exposing a customer’s full card details. When a customer decides to buy a product in ChatGPT, a token is generated and sent to the merchant’s system via an API, which can then process the payment either through Stripe or an existing gateway.
For Shopify merchants, integration occurs seamlessly in the background. Product data—including prices, stock, images, and variants, is provided in real time to ChatGPT. Orders appear in the merchant’s Shopify Admin, ensuring full transparency, correct fee attribution, and that the merchant remains the “merchant of record” with control over customer interactions.
Vanessa Lee, product manager at Shopify, highlighted that the system enables customers to discover products naturally within AI interactions and complete purchases without disrupting their flow. ACP is released as open-source, allowing developers and merchants to build custom integrations.
