TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – A restaurant owner is cleaning up after the fourth break-in at Rocco’s Little Chicago Pizzeria, prompting safety concerns from other businesses in the area.
Shortly after 3 a.m. on April 1, the door to Rocco’s Little Chicago Pizzeria was shattered. For owner Rocco DiGrazia, it was anything but an April Fool’s joke.
“It’s just a pain, you know. First of all, it’s a betrayal of your personal space, it’s a time suck, a money suck, and just, you know, it’s just terrible for everything,” DiGrazia said.
The individual ran after finding an empty cash register, but not before leaving DiGrazia with a mess to clean up and a bill for a new door. Nothing was stolen, and no one was hurt.
“It all adds up, you know, at the end of the day it comes out of the till, and it’s a pain in the butt, and you know, maybe it scares some people off that this is a bad neighborhood or something, which it’s not,” DiGrazia said.
Local business owners react
DiGrazia said this is the fourth break-in he has had as a 28-year restaurant owner, but the first one at Rocco’s new location near Broadway and Tucson boulevards.
While DiGrazia said he has come to expect it, Nallali Turrubiates at Beyond Cycle said the incident has made her uncomfortable.
“I obviously feel unsafe and a little bit nervous because I just don’t want it to happen at my studio, especially with all the equipment that we have, and then you know the computers, the bikes, etc.,” Turrubiates said.
She said she has had several interactions with homeless people entering the studio, or rocks being thrown at the back window. After Wednesday’s break-in, she said she is taking extra precautions.
“I actually arm the studio, even though I’m here, I arm it, and then I lock the doors because I just feel scared,” Turrubiates said.
Despite her apprehension, Turrubiates said she loves the plaza and the community local businesses have built there.
The community has found security footage from the morning of April 1 themselves, in hopes of helping find whoever did this.
“Hopefully, we’ll find him or at least dissuade him from doing this again,” DiGrazia said.
The Tucson Police Department is actively investigating but has no additional details to share.
