LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A segment of Boulder Highway in the City of Henderson is undergoing a significant transformation as part of the “Reimagine Boulder Highway” project.
The $170 million initiative aims to revitalize a seven-and-a-half-mile stretch with new bus lanes, improved lighting, traffic systems, and buffered bike lanes. However, the project has sparked concerns.
Prof. Michael Green, chair of the UNLV Department of History, highlighted the complexity of Boulder Highway as a whole, noting, “It goes through Henderson. It goes through the county. It goes through unincorporated townships. It goes through the city. So you have to get everybody together if you want one consistent approach.”
While the improvements are welcomed by some, others, like Bien Parel, owner of Pinoy 1968, are feeling the negative impact.
Parel’s restaurant, known for its Filipino cuisine, has seen a significant drop in business since construction began in 2024. “It almost dropped 50% since they started construction here,” Parel said. The confusion caused by traffic cones and altered signals has deterred customers, with Parel noting, “The first-timers, they are always first-timers because that is it. They do not want to come back with this issue around here.”
The project’s completion is slated for August 2027, but Parel worries about the future of his business. “Me and my wife already talked about it. And hopefully God will help us and maybe we can still continue,” he said. Parel is calling for support from the city, stating, “We just want any support from them because our sales really, really went down. We are only regular people. We just want to have a business to survive.”
