Known for its laid-back coastal charm and historic waterfront, Beaufort is experiencing a surge in new development and infrastructure improvements as the town continues to grow.
With a population of just over 5,000 residents, town leaders say Beaufort is no longer North Carolina’s best-kept secret. New hotels, infrastructure upgrades and waterfront investments are reshaping the historic community.
“Beaufort is working really hard to host not just their visitors, but to retain their culture as a strong community,” said Erin Knight, president of the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce.
Much of the recent attention has centered on the waterfront. The Compass Hotel recently opened its doors in the historic district, bringing a nationally recognized brand to the area.
“It is really neat especially being part of the third historic town in North Carolina,” said Kari Skillman, director of marketing for the hotel. “We are trying to show them that we are an asset to them where they can bring in more people some people get to experience this beautiful area.”
While new developments are visible above ground, town officials say significant changes are happening below the surface as well.
Beaufort is in the middle of a multi-million-dollar utility overhaul funded in part by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The project includes replacing aging water, sewer and stormwater systems.
“Our underground utility infrastructure has been a major focus of both the board, the staff and the community as a whole,” said Town Manager Matt Zapp. “Being the third oldest community in North Carolina, you would understand that our infrastructure is dated.”
The town has also recently taken back management of its docks, allowing leaders to reinvest revenue directly into waterfront improvements.
Zapp said the focus is not simply on expanding the town, but on protecting its character while making necessary improvements.
“We’re consistently and continually respecting the past but embracing the future,” Zapp said. “So it’s not about growth, but about calculated moves. What we’re working on is preserving what we already have and treating it well.”
As Beaufort continues to evolve, town leaders say their goal is to maintain the community’s historic identity while preparing for a sustainable future.
