APACHE JUNCTION, AZ (AZFamily) — A dog groomer in Apache Junction is left without her only source of income after a reckless driver crashed into her mobile grooming trailer and fled the scene, leaving thousands of dollars in damage.
Surveillance video shows a pickup truck crashing into Purple Pup Salon early Sunday morning, pushing the trailer back and causing extensive damage before the driver took off.
Jenna Mangum, 23, said the trailer is her livelihood.
“It’s definitely everything. It’s my only form of income,” Mangum said.
Mangum and her boyfriend, Dallas Calcutt, spent months renovating the 1960s camper from the ground up.
“I’d say an everyday project,” Calcutt said.
The couple worked long days and late nights, investing thousands of dollars into the mobile grooming business.
“We’d get off work from doing anything and she wanted brand new cabinets built up inside of there to store all of her stuff,” Calcutt said.
Mangum said business had been growing.
“And it’s been skyrocketing this year alone on business. I’ve more than doubled last year,” Mangum said.
Crash caught on camera
Early Sunday morning, Mangum and Calcutt discovered the trailer had been moved.
“We came out an hour before we had to hook up the trailer Sunday morning. And the trailer was not where we left it,” Mangum said.
Surveillance video from a neighbor’s home shows a pickup truck pull into a dirt lot across the street. Within seconds, a cloud of dust moves from one side of the road to the other as the truck crashes into the trailer with enough force to push it back.
“We saw drag marks and debris in the road… completely smashed to pieces and just about totaled,” Mangum said.
The damage includes ripped-out flooring, destroyed custom cabinets and blown-apart walls.
“And that’s where I actually had my brand new cabinet that I just built for her. And then when I opened the door, I saw that the cabinet was no more,” Calcutt said.
Mangum said the damage is extensive.
“It’s definitely over $10,000 in damage,” Mangum said.
Because the trailer was uninsured, Mangum and Calcutt are responsible for all repair costs.
“I’ve canceled over $2,000 this week alone,” Mangum said.
“Definitely feels like everything I’ve ever been working for, just being stripped from you,” Mangum said.
Police are still searching for the driver. Anyone who recognizes the truck is asked to call the Apache Junction police department.
