Police are investigating a workplace shooting in Almont that led to a deputy-involved shooting of the suspect on Wednesday morning, Nov. 5.
At about 8:30 a.m., a 32-year-old man from Columbus, Michigan, entered a business in Almont and was involved in a workplace shooting, Michigan State Police Third District Public Information Officer Lt. Kim Vetter said in a news conference livestreamed by WXYZ on Thursday afternoon.
One individual was transported to a local hospital in an unknown condition as of Wednesday morning, according to a release by Almont Police Department posted on Facebook.
Vetter said the suspect fled the scene, and responding officers issued an alert to area law enforcement about the vehicle identification and suspect.
Imlay City Police Department officers located the suspect vehicle on Interstate 69 and began pursuit, joined by Lapeer County Sheriff’s Department and MSP, Vetter said.
The suspect stopped his vehicle on Sutton Road near Wilder Road, a dirt road in Metamora Township, and “engaged” with two Lapeer County Sheriff deputies, who responded and fired their issued weapons, injuring the suspect, Vetter said.
Vetter said the interaction is under investigation, and it is unclear how many shots were fired and if the suspect also shot a weapon.
The suspect was provided with medical aid and transported to a local hospital, where he remains under arrest and is in stable condition as of Wednesday afternoon, Vetter said.
Both Lapeer County Sheriff deputies involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave, Vetter said.
Five patrol vehicles from Imlay City, MSP, Dryden Township and Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office were damaged in pursuit of the suspect, according to MSP Third District on X. No officers were injured in the pursuit of the suspect.
Vetter said MSP is investigating the officer-involved shooting, and the Almont Police Department is investigating the shooting at the business.
Almont Police Department did not immediately respond to Free Press questions about the suspect and victim. On Wednesday afternoon, police dispatch referred the Free Press to the news release posted by the department on Wednesday morning.
As of Wednesday morning, the condition of the victim is unknown, according to the news release.
The suspect is in custody, and there is no further threat to the public as of Wednesday morning, according to the release.
