Lucknow: Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak urged people to adopt a healthy lifestyle to prevent asthma, allergies, and other lung-related diseases. He was addressing the 59th ICAAI Con organised by the department of Respiratory Medicine and Critical Care at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) on Thursday.Pathak said the state govt is running several awareness campaigns through the health department to control such illnesses. He emphasized that diseases like asthma and allergies can largely be prevented by making lifestyle changes. “Air pollution increases the risk of respiratory diseases. Asthma, a type of lung allergy, is one of the most common non-communicable diseases, affecting around 30 crore people globally and causing about 4.5 lakh deaths every year—many of which are preventable,” he said. Dy CM urged people to plant more trees, avoid dust exposure, and use public transport to reduce vehicular emissions. He added that such conferences help spread awareness and update doctors and paramedical staff about the latest technologies and medicines. Head of the department, Prof Ved Prakash, informed that around 5% of India’s population suffers from asthma, which is more common in women than men. It is also the leading chronic illness among children, affecting about 14% of them worldwide. The event was attended by KGMU vice chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand.
