Construction for a new pedestrian crossing on Spring Mountain Road is set to begin Monday, sparking both excitement and concern for one local business owner.
While the project aims to enhance safety, some are worried about its impact on their businesses.
Tiara Olivas, co-owner of Afterlife with partner Reina Manuel, expressed concerns about the timing of the construction.
“I have known about the redevelopment plan and I have been excited about it, but seeing that it was kind of happening so soon triggered a fight or flight response in me of how are we going to make this work?” Olivas said.
The shop, which sells boba and products from two dozen local businesses, fears a potential decline in customers, especially during the holiday season.
Metro reports a nearly 13% increase in pedestrian deaths this year, highlighting the need for improved safety measures.
Commissioner Justin Jones emphasized the project’s importance. He sent News 3 this statement:
“This project has been one of the most requested safety improvements from our Inspiring Spring Mountain Redevelopment Plan. It will make it easier and safer for residents and visitors to cross between two of our most vibrant plazas. Public safety matters, and this marks another important step toward a more walkable and connected Chinatown.”
The new crossing will feature pedestrian-activated flashing beacons, high-visibility thermoplastic crosswalk markings, dedicated spot lighting, ADA-compliant curb ramps and signage, and a ruby red pedestrian signal pole.
Olivas acknowledged the benefits, noting the high number of jaywalkers she sees in the area.
“Part of the past time here in the shop is just watching as people jaywalk across the street, so I definitely see a lot of it every day,” she said.
The crossing will be constructed on Spring Mountain Road between Chinatown Plaza and Shanghai Plaza, a frequently traveled area in the Chinatown corridor.
Construction is set to start on October 27th and is expected to last a minimum of 45 days.
