MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The Madison Fire Department put out a fire on a rooftop at an East Towne area business after responding to reports of a gas leak Wednesday afternoon.

Just before 1 p.m., crews responded to the 4700 block of East Towne Boulevard after construction workers reported a lift truck hit a gas meter.

When fire crews arrived, the area was partially evacuated. Crews found a small fire on the roof where workers were torching fresh mortar, prompting a full structure response.

MFD evacuated the business next door and took control of the situation, canceling the full structure response.

Firefighters investigated sections of the roof for gases and fire extensions. They later ventilated the building and handed the scene over to Madison Gas and Electric.
