Peequal has raised £925K in funding, bringing total capital raised to £1.4 million across three funding rounds. The company manufactures urinals designed for women at festivals and events.
Co-founders Amber Probyn, and Hazel McShane developed the concept after working at music festivals in the UK. The urinals are three times quicker to use than portable toilets and are designed to minimize splashback. Users squat while holding handles, with the design allowing clothing to come down at the front.
The latest design allows the urinals to be flat-packed and stacked. A lorry carrying 21 portable toilets could instead carry 56 Peequal urinals, according to the founders. The urinals are manufactured in the UK from sugar cane and plastic recovered from the ocean.
Peequal has been used at 25 events this year, including Glastonbury Festival and the London Marathon. The funding will support manufacturing of next-generation urinals and expansion to events in Europe, the United States, and Australia. Event organisers worldwide have expressed interest in the product.
Julia Davies, impact investor at We Have The Power, is a key backer. Davies first encountered the urinals while running the London Marathon.
