NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – More than 370 business leaders are set to gather for a conference to examine economic trends and growth opportunities in the Lowcountry.
The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with College of Charleston economists and 30 business leaders to identify two major growth factors: increased air service and workforce expansion.
Leaders said growth in passenger service has encouraged companies to locate headquarters in Charleston, with money getting reinvested into goods and services in the area. The workforce growth ensures businesses can expand and people can find jobs.
“It’s hard to have economic growth if you don’t have population growth,” Chamber CEO Kevin Sheilley said. “But I think if you really look at the diverse economy that’s been built in this community over the last 30 years, it’s the envy of many places in the country.”
The Chamber has identified transportation and affordable housing as the main challenges facing the growing community. Officials said they are working with public sector partners on solutions.
The sold-out conference will run from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Chamber will post its forecast book on its website after the event concludes.
