SWANSEA — Another new business will be moving in along the Route 118 strip — a prime commercial zone that is heating back up.
Discount retailer Five Below will take up an on-again, off-again vacant space at 58 and 86 Swansea Mall Drive, joining Dollar Tree and the incoming Aldi’s grocery chain on the 87,000-square-foot property owned by Gator Investments of Miami Lakes, Florida.
The buildings were built in 1982.
Harkening back to a time when — a decade ago — the Swansea Mall was in its economic heyday, and the property along Swansea Mall Drive boasted a Price Rite supermarket and a Toys ‘R’ Us store, Town Administrator Mallory Aronstein recalled “Swansea had a vibrant economy.”
Aronstein confirmed Five Below’s decision to open a location in Swansea, sharing that the company was recently issued a permit.
“We are thrilled,” she added. “We look forward to returning to that state as more and more businesses open up,” she said, explaining that a revitalization of commercial growth for the plaza, which is situated across from a host of other businesses gone dark in the Swansea Crossing Plaza, including Big Lots, formerly at 207 Swansea Mall Drive before announcing its bankruptcy in March, “is exactly what we’ve been working toward in our economic development priorities.”
What does Five Below sell?
Promising a bargain for tweens and teens, Five Below championed “trendy, fun, and affordable finds” priced under $5, but stores have added a “Five Beyond” section where price points can creep up yet still remain reasonable.
The company’s online marketplace offers everything from arts and crafts, beauty products, room décor, cosplay costumes, candy, and pet supplies.
Originally floated as a “kids’ brand” by founders David Schlessinger and Tom Vellios, the chain opened in 2002 and reached $1 billion in sales by 2016. According to the website, Five Below operates 1,700 nationwide as of 2024.
