PEORIA (25News Now) -Another small business inside Twin Towers in Downtown Peoria won’t renew its lease after a disagreement Saturday with one of the mall’s new owners, costing the business owner a full day of income.
This is the latest of a recent series of disputes between unhappy business owners leasing space at Twin Towers Mall and the mall’s new management. The management is demanding they pay sharply higher rent or leave the mall.
Saturday, Amy Tomblin, owner of Meet Me On Madison, a café and event space inside the Twin Towers Mall, said she arrived around noon to prepare for a pre-paid private event at 2 p.m.
When she got there, Tomblin said she saw police cars outside and found the mall’s entry doors locked.
After gaining access to her space, Tomblin said one of the mall’s new owners, Lueshand Nunn from Make Solutions LLC, told her the mall would no longer be open on Saturdays. Tomblin says she never received notice of any change in operating hours.
Tomblin said when she unlocked an exterior door to allow her customers inside, Nunn repeatedly closed the door and did not explain a reason for her behavior.
“…I was told that the other owner, who is a Peoria Police officer, said if I do have my event today that is scheduled, that she would have the police shut it down,” said Tomblin.
“I am taking the step myself to refund them their money and cancel the event. At the end of the day, it affects me and my business and my word and my reputation, so I would rather protect that and protect my customers from being harassed at their event,” she continued.
Tomblin said she will not renew her lease and plans to close her business at that location on March 31. She said she lost about $600 from Saturday’s canceled event.
“They’re all sitting outside of my suite, outside of my door, intimidation tactics. The police will not remove them, they’re literally blocking my door sitting out on the bench,” said Tomblin, explaining that Nunn and one other person had been sitting outside her shop since she arrived.
25News approached Nunn for comment regarding the safety concerns that led to the change in mall hours, but she declined an interview.
