MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A string of recent business closures at The Market Common has raised concerns among shop owners in the area.
Crepe Creations Cafe on DeVille Street closed without warning or explanation around two weeks ago, becoming the latest in a string of businesses to shut down at Market Common in recent years.
Other closures in the area include the Southern Living Store, Allbright Cleaners, Korean barbecue restaurant Mura, Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop, and Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux.
Most businesses did not give reasons for their closures.
East Coast Tea Shop owner Caitlyn Rapacz said she has watched multiple businesses close over the four years she has operated her shop in Market Common.
She said rising rent and overall business costs have been a main factor.
“Yeah, it’s hard doing business these days,” Rapacz said. “The costs are always very high.”
Other business owners in the area said the lack of tourists has compounded the impact of rising rent.
Reports from Myrtle Beach leaders show tourism is down 3%, a decrease that has affected small businesses in the area.
Rapacz said the Market Common management team has been helpful as she works to stay open, communicating with businesses about developments in the shopping center and promoting each business to customers.
“They always send out emails to us, and they’re always coordinating with us,” Rapacz said. “They have a great marketing coordinator who’s always in communication.”
Rapacz said each closure is difficult to witness, regardless of the cause.
“It’s always sad to see a business shut down because they have to, or they have to get another job that pays more,” she said.
Market Common management said it was unable to provide a comment regarding the closures or any future plans.
