FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) — As the city of Fayetteville works to return to normal after a weekend winter storm, many residents are still dealing with its aftermath.
Some residents along Murchison Road woke up Tuesday without power or water, while others across the city experienced pipe breaks caused by freezing temperatures. Just one day earlier, Fayetteville recorded a record low of 12 degrees.
One business owner said the damage hit close to home.
Hannah Rodriguez arrived at her shop on Fort Bragg Road to find several inches of water covering the floor after a pipe froze and burst overnight. The flooding inside Hannah’s Rock and Gem caused damage that could cost thousands of dollars to repair.
“I feel like I’m probably in a little bit of shock. Small business owners were. Most of us are already. We’re dealing with a rough time right now. We are all really kind of just trying our best to skim by,” Rodriguez said.
Water soaked the carpet throughout the store and damaged antique cabinets used to display merchandise.
“It’s wet, we can see already it’s taken in water pretty deep. After something like gets wet on the bottom, it doesn’t go back, it gets moldy, it expands,” she said.
The flooding also reached an area where Rodriguez stored valuable collectibles, including Pokémon cards that provide a second source of income.
“It has flooded the shop completely to the point that it’s going to be very big loss for me,” Rodriguez said. “It’s that specific area where the water buildup is was a lot of the inventory that’s been held or I’ve collected or gathered and kept to liquidate if ever needed. So it’s kind of like a savings account just getting wiped out almost.”
Rodriguez has owned the shop for about a year and a half and said the damage is a major setback. Still, she said she hasn’t had to face it alone.
“I have these people here who are helping me and have made their way out and are happy to help,” she said.
