More than two dozen Madison-area businesses plan to close Friday as part of a “national shutdown” in response to recent federal immigration enforcement and people killed by federal agents.
Other Dane County businesses said they will donate to organizations that support immigrants and other efforts.
The strike follows a similar protest in Minnesota last week and calls on people across the country to not shop or go to work or school.
“The people of the Twin Cities have shown the way for the whole country — to stop ICE’s reign of terror, we need to SHUT IT DOWN,” according to a website about the shutdown.
In addition to the business closings, a student walkout and rally is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Library Mall, followed by a march and rally at the Capitol at 3:30 p.m.
Students and community members gathered on campus and at the Capitol earlier this week to protest tactics used by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after the shooting deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good this month in Minneapolis.
