The Department of Public Health and Social Services is working toward building a healthier community by joining the Lions Club International District 204’s Annual Health Fair set for Saturday at the Micronesia Mall.

The event is designed to help the community maintain “a healthy lifestyle” through “general health awareness” and direct access to preventative services such as screenings.

“We appreciate the opportunity to partner with Lions International District 204 to provide free access to these vital health and well-being services,” DPHSS Director Theresa Arriola said. “Together, we can provide much-needed support to improve the health of our community members”.

Public Health said the health fair will promote various “essential” health services, such as their Non-Communicable Disease Prevention and Control Program, which promotes healthier lifestyles.

“Staff will provide educational materials focused on diabetes and tobacco prevention, risk reduction strategies, and information regarding the Guam Tobacco Free Guam Quitline,” Public Health said in a release.

Resources from the Guam Comprehensive Cancer Control Program will also be available, providing attendees with access to education on cancer risk reduction and “learn about available community resources.”

Public Health said attendees will also have access to “on-site” eligibility assessments and enrollment in the Guam Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.

Other healthier lifestyle initiatives Public Health will be promoting address hypertension through the Guam Hypertension Prevention and Control Project.

“Representatives will provide information and educational materials on managing high blood pressure, with opportunities for project enrollment,” Public Health said.

According to Public Health, new parents will benefit from attending with details about available support services through the Maternal Infant Early Childhood Home Visiting Program.

Senior citizens can meanwhile find information on services provided by the DPHSS Division of Senior Citizens “to include information and awareness on Title III Home and Community-Based Aging Services, including supportive services, nutrition and family caregiver, Medicare assistance, and protection and advocacy on Bureau of Adult Protective Services for elderly 60 years and older and family caregivers,” the release said.

The Lions Clubs International District 204 Annual Health Fair will take place on Saturday at the Micronesia Mall from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
