THOMASTON, CT (WFSB) – Several businesses in Thomaston were damaged in an overnight fire.
First responders worked for hours to extinguish the flames that originated in Patti’s Place, firefighters said.
The call came in around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, according to Thomaston fire Chief Glenn Clark.
No one was injured in the fire, which Clark said affected about five or six businesses located in the same building.
Viewer video captured flames blasting through the walls and windows of the affected buildings.
Fire crews said they battled extreme cold temperatures that created numerous challenges during the response. Fire hydrants, hoses, and truck apparatus all froze in the frigid conditions.
Clark said the old building presented additional obstacles with a thick ceiling that was hard to get through. A lot of smoke filled the structure, which made access difficult.
Crews said they could not get to a gas shut off, which required them to wait for the gas company to arrive. The company worked to find the line underground.
Once the gas was shut off, they planned to use an excavator to dig through the building and ceiling to gain better access to flames that still burned.
Several agencies responded to the scene to help with the firefighting efforts.
The fire prompted community members to come out and show their support after they heard the news.
“It certainly is a tragedy for Thomaston. It’s a big part of the community that is gone now. It’s been very hard looking at this all go down,” said Justin Gentile, a Thomaston resident.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Police shut down the area of Main Street and Park Street and advised people to avoid the downtown area.
