While a Brunswick County beach town narrows its eyes on beach erosion, developers of major projects are widening their eyes at opportunity.
Brunswick residents during the week of Jan. 12 saw an arrest in connection with a fatal shooting, some project updates and soon-to-be closing signs.

The longstanding Family Dollar at Clairmont Shopping Center in Leland is preparing to close its doors. The store is having a large sale before it officially closes in February.

Here we grow again
Maco Road Planned Development, 12,499-home project proposed between Town Creek Road and N.C. 87, has not earned county approval. However, developers have the option to form a development agreement with the county that could put the project in the hands of county commissioners instead of the planning board. In Leland, developers of the Terrapin planned development was given the OK to change plans and add nearly five acres to the project. Approved changes include revising zoning designations of approximately nearly 40 acres to develop a new hospital and medical facility area.
The agenda
County commissioners will have a special meeting at 9 a.m. on Jan. 20 to discuss the county’s goals for fiscal year 2027. Following that meeting will be the board’s regular meeting at 6 p.m.
After months of live streaming county commissioner meetings, the county is looking to eventually live stream planning board meetings. Residents say the change would improve accessibility and transparency.
Holden Beach commissioners will also be holding a meeting on Jan. 20, starting at 5 p.m. Topics of discussion include, stormwater, Block Q, and paid parking. This will be the board’s first meeting since former commissioner Tracey Thomas resigned.
