SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS) — The City of Springfield, in collaboration with the Office of Community Relations, is set to launch the Springfield Minority Business Institute (SMBI) in February 2026.
This multi-week educational initiative aims to support minority-owned businesses and nonprofit organizations through targeted instruction, resource access, and networking opportunities.
“The Springfield Minority Business Institute reflects our commitment to creating opportunities for all entrepreneurs to succeed,” said Mayor Misty Buscher.
The program will run on Wednesdays from February through March, with classes from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., concluding with a graduation ceremony on April 1, 2026, at the University of Illinois Springfield.
Class Locations and Schedule:
- February 4, 11, 18, and 25, 2026 / 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.; Community Room, Fire Station 6- 2121 S. 11th Street, Springfield
- March 4, 2026 / 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.; Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce- 501 E. Capitol Avenue, Springfield
- March 11, 2026 / 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.; University of Illinois Springfield- School of Business and Management
- March 18, 2026 / 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.; Innovate Springfield- 15 N. Old State Capitol Plaza, Springfield
Participants will receive instruction from various City of Springfield departments, including the Office of Planning and Economic Development, Building and Zoning, and Purchasing.
The Springfield Urban League will lead a discussion on Feb. 25. Sessions will provide insights into city processes, compliance requirements, and opportunities for engagement with municipal government.
