A Semmes police officer and a local business owner were both left injured after exchanging gunfire early Saturday morning.
On Jan. 4, around 2:55 a.m., Semmes police were on routine patrol when they noticed an opened door at Bowman’s Auto Air garage located at 7461 Moffett Road, according to a news release.
The officers also noticed a cut padlock at the open door, leading them to enter the building, it says.
After announcing their presence several times, police say they found a camper trailer containing the shop owner, John Bowman, who was armed with a handgun.
An exchange of gunfire ensued between Bowman and the officers, and an officer was grazed on the left side of his back, according to the release.
Bowman was shot several times on his left leg, left shoulder, and left side.
Officers then took a tactical position outside the garage and attempted to call out Bowman, who they say refused to come out of the camper.
Semmes Police Department then contacted Mobile County Sheriff’s Office for assistance.
MCSO was able to extract Bowman without further incident, and he was transported to a local hospital, the release says.
The injured Semmes Police Officer was treated at the scene.
Bowman is still in the hospital and listed in stable condition.
The investigation is ongoing, and further information will be released upon its completion, according to MCSO.
