MARION, Iowa (KCRG) – A former Marion business owner was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in federal prison for gun charges.
28-year-old Cordell Mayfield, of Cedar Rapids, was convicted of possessing a firearm as a felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
According to court documents, Mayfield stored a gun with an obliterated serial number inside his used appliance business in Marion in September 2024.
Officers received a call from a concerned parent asking them to check on the caller’s child, who was with Mayfield at his business in Marion. Officers performed a welfare check and found the gun in Mayfield’s hand.
A few months prior, Mayfield said in a recording that he preferred guns with obliterated serial numbers, according to court documents.
Police say Mayfield’s criminal history started at age 10 and continued into adulthood with numerous drug-related and violent offenses. His criminal conduct occurred while he was under supervision and while incarcerated.
This includes conduct in the past month while he was awaiting sentencing, when he allegedly possessed weapons and was involved in fighting.
Mayfield was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison, three years of supervised release, and fined $2,000. He was also ordered to forfeit the firearm seized from him.
