ASME appoints two new executives and promotes a communications leader to strengthen its international leadership team.
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) announced the appointment of two seasoned executives to newly created leadership positions and the promotion of a proven communications leader, strengthening its global team as it fosters international growth. The expanded leadership structure is designed to support the Society’s growing membership and volunteer base and strategic initiatives worldwide. The international engineering society has hired Mason Dye as its first managing director of customer experience, promoted Karen Russo to managing director of strategic communications, and selected Alex Tan as director of its activities in the Asia Pacific region, including China and ASEAN member states.
Dye is responsible for building and advancing ASME’s customer experience (CX) function and expanding capabilities to enable customer-led decision-making at the enterprise level. He will spearhead ASME’s customer-led strategy and operations and lead cross-functional teams to improve customer journeys. Most recently, he was senior director of customer experience enablement, strategy and governance for AARP, where he worked since 2011. Previously, he was a senior manager for Kaiser Associates, leading client relationships and managing project teams in the business consulting firm’s Washington and London offices. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and foreign language from The University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from Georgetown University, in addition to multiple licenses and certifications in CX management, digital media and marketing, strategy and innovation. Dye reports to Josh Heitsenrether, ASME’s senior managing director of marketing and digital strategy.

In her new role, Russo leads ASME’s global enterprise-wide communications strategy, helping to shape the organization’s voice, reputation, and strategic positioning. She oversees all facets of internal and external communications, collaborating closely with business unit leaders, international offices in India, China, and Singapore, and volunteer leaders. Russo has been with ASME for more than 14 years, most recently serving as its senior director of strategic communications. She has nearly three decades of experience in marketing, copywriting, and video production, including positions with Zillicast and Murray Hill Studios, where she worked on projects for ABC Broadcast, Court TV, and others. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration from American InterContinental University, a certificate in strategic communications from Cornell University, and an executive MBA in internal communications from Augment.org. Russo reports to Chandra Clouden, ASME’s chief human resources officer.

Tan will represent ASME in the Asia Pacific region, where he is responsible for driving growth and the expansion of ASME commercial and academic activities. He will coordinate with the chief representative of the Beijing Representative Office of ASME, with responsibility for overseeing its operations and managing its staff. Tan has served in senior leadership roles in international engineering and technology organizations, including as CEO and board member of STӒUBLI, a Swiss-based global leader in industrial automation and robotics. As the leader of the company’s Singapore operation, he led its electrical and fluid connectors and industrial robotics divisions for the Asia Pacific region. Most recently, he was director of programme and business development at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He earned an MBA from Western Sydney University and studied international relations and business development at Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. Tan is based in Singapore and reports to John Hasselman, ASME’s managing director of international operations and engagement.
